Community Library

The Jorge Amado Library, located in the Pierre Verger Cultural Space (ECPV), has been in existence since March 2006, becoming an important landmark in the Engenho Velho de Brotas neighborhood. One of its main goals is to meet and raise awareness among its young and adult audience, in order to develop their taste for reading in a pleasing manner.

ECPV is located at the Vila América hill, favoring the communities of Engenho Velho de Brotas, Ogunjá, Federação and surrounding low-income neighborhoods. The Jorge Amado library is computerized and equipped with a collection of about 3,500 books. Nowadays, it also counts on donations made by readers looking to exchange books that were once sitting on their shelves.

The library caters to an audience of children, teenagers as well as educators and teachers, who are able to access the collection through borrowing. After creating their membership card, the reader can check out the book. After seven years in operation, we currently have 1,126 people registered in an ever-expanding process.

In 2012, the Pierre Verger Cultural Space received the Mais Cultura Award - Reading Corners by the Pedro Calmon Foundation / State Government / Federal Government for the project presented by Lana Lula. Since then, the center has kept the project going, encouraging reading and granting access to books, developing weekly recreational activities where participants learn to use the library as a playful and enjoyable space welcome to all.
