The photographic collection of the Pierre Verger Foundation is composed of 62,000 negatives and 8,000 prints, which represent almost the entire photographic work of Pierre Verger.
Pierre Verger sorted his negatives by geographical order (continent – country – city – borough) and by thematic order in the case of places represented in a large number of photographs (the Pelourinho district for example).

In 1999-2000 the Foundation digitized the entire collection of Verger’s 62,000 negatives and made them available through an online database respecting his classification.

The website presents a selection of 5,700 negatives, chosen between the 62,000 images available at the Foundation. They can be accessed either by :
  • Expand the geographical explorer to visualize the images and discover all the places photographed by Pierre Verger.
    Obs.: the explorer reproduces Pierre Verger’s classification while taking into account that, since its creation, some places have received new names (for example today’s Benin was formerly called Dahomey).
  • Consulting thematic albums that allows for aesthetic or thematic matching between Verger’s photographs.
  • Operating a search by location, date, or picture’s reference number
